Dunedin's final season concerts complete the Brandenburgs set with the impossibly virtuosic Brandenburg concerto number 2 for Trumpet, Violin, Oboe and Recorder. Bach's Cantata BWV 174 is one of those gems that show how Bach re-invented his own music, in this occasion his Brandenburg concerto no 3.

“In 1692, Henry Purcell's semi-opera "The Fairy Queen" was premiered. Henry Purcell used Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream as a template for the Baroque opera. Philippa Waite has choreographed several songs from the "Fairy Queen" into dances that are taught in this workshop.
Experience in Baroque dance is required for this course.”

“… This morning, we dip into the writings presumably authored by Giovanni de' Bardi, Count of Vernio (1534 – 1612), from his correspondence with Giulio Caccini (1551 – 1618). Bardi is credited by posterity as a cheerleader for the simpler, more dramatic and expressive monody that led to what we have come to know as Baroque music, in opposition to the headier polyphony that characterized much music from the 16th century. …”

Parthenia, New York’s premiere viol consort, will present Musica Universalis - Musical Invention in the Age of Discovery, on Saturday, May 5 at 8:00 PM at Picture Ray Studio, 245 West 18th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues) in Manhattan. Special guest will be renowned viol virtuoso Sarah Cunningham.
Repertoire will be selections from the late 15th and 16th centuries by Thomas Stolzter, Heinrich Isaac, Vincenzo Ruffo, William Cornish, Christopher Tye, Robert Parsons and William Byrd.

“Dutch harpsichordist, fortepianist and conductor Jacques Ogg visited Bloomington, Indiana in January and joined me [Wendy Gillespie] for a conversation about his role as artistic director for Lyra Baroque Orchestra (Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN) and his experience of being a student of the late Gustav Leonhardt.
Jacques also shares his thoughts about early keyboards and points out some of his more “interesting” recordings. …“

“Kick off the summer with a weekend of small and large ensembles on an idyllic retreat center campus in rural Connecticut. The Amherst Early Music Weekend Workshops are smaller, more relaxed versions of the summer festival. Take classes in a variety of subjects for most of the day -- repertory, notation, technique, and ensembles -- and in the evenings enjoy all-workshop group sessions (kind of like Collegium at the Festival) and a Sunday night faculty concert. There's also English country dancing and the companionship of your fellow musicians.”

“The vocal and instrumental consort Capilla Flamenca takes its name from the choir of the court chapel of Emperor Charles V. When Charles left the Low Countries in 1517, he took his best musicians with him in order to accompany him as 'living polyphony' to Spain.
Today's Capilla Flamenca recruits its specialized musicians mainly from Flanders so as to bring to life again the unique timbre of this brilliant 15th - 16th music in its full authenticity. According to the needs of the programme or genre, today's vocal core of the ensemble (counter tenor - tenor - baritone - bass) is enlarged with an alta capella (wind instruments), a bassa capella (string instruments), an organ or with complementary singers. …
Between Monday 25 and Friday 29 June four aspiring harpsichordists will work with The English Concert, their artistic director Harry Bicket and two solo singers in directing a range of Baroque repertoire, culminating in a public concert in which all student participants direct The English Concert. The Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) at the Giorgio Cini Foundation will launch a new programme in 2012: Advanced Workshops on Ottoman Classical Music. The workshops are intended for musicians and musicologists who wish to further their instrumental and musicological knowledge in this important field of traditional music. The teacher as well as artistic and cultural director of the advanced workshops is Kudsi Erguner, an internationally-renowned musician and musicologist who, for several years now, has been teaching courses of ney flute at the IISMC, assisted by the ethnomusicologist Giovanni De Zorzi, an expert on traditionalmusic for the area in question. …

““Carmelite Vespers 1709” presents a reconstruction of musical performances in Rome in 1709, based on a new critical edition by Italian Handel expert Angela Romagnoli.
In early 18th century-Rome the holiday of Madonna del Carmine was celebrated with a lavish musical pasticcio. Italian Early Music specialist Alessandro de Marchi, his Academia Montis Regalis and an excellent ensemble of solo vocalists present the reconstruction of such a service as it might have been performed in 1709 under the direction of Venetian master Antonio Caldara (1670–1736). The programme combines lesser-known but stunningly beautiful pieces by Caldara himself with famous motets by his predecessor Handel such as “Dixit Dominus” or “Laudate pueri”. …
