“The Bach Cantatas Website (BCW) is a comprehensive site covering all aspects of J.S. Bach's cantatas and his other vocal works. The BCW contains discussions and detailed discographies of each cantata and other vocal works, performers and general topics. The BCW also contains texts and translations, scores, music examples, articles and interviews, and over 8,200 short biographies of performers of Bach's vocal works and players of his keyboard and lute works, as well as of poets & composers associated with Bach. 
     

New Waves in Ferrara: Two Bands, Fresh Sounds

The reception is planned for Sunday morning from 11am and the internship will begin in the afternoon. It ends the following Sunday morning after church, during which we will sing excerpts from the  worked program.

Teachers Marco Beasley and Guido Morini will offer an intensive workshop on Italian music from 1500 to 1650. Singers and continuo players with an interest in this type of repertoire are welcome.
                 

“The Handel Festival has been held in Halle since 1922. It all began with new productions of Handel’s operas and these still form the backbone of the festival programme of today. Every year, the Handel Festival and the Halle Opera House produce one of the numerous Handel operas.  Of the 42 operas by Handel which have come down to us, 40 of them have been performend at the Handel Festival to date. This is a unique record, inrivalled anywhere in the world. The Handel Festival Orchestra Halle first distinguished itself as a Braoque ensemble performing on period instruments for the very special task of  accompanying Handel operas in Halle in 1993.

On-site articles and useful studies as well as downloadable materials can be found in order to assist learning and teaching of the recorder.
                    

Sunday concerts -- concert goers are totally immersed in "embar(o)quement music. Saturday "discoveries" with activities for the "curious" or for those who wish to be initiated to the universe of the Baroque. If you are in the area, you may want to consider reading the concert/events listings planned for this early music festival in the region of Valenciennes (FR), they both look quite appealing.

“The Bach Competition Leipzig is regarded as one of the major international competitions for young artists. It took place for the first time in 1950 and was held every four years from 1964 to 1996 with five subjects and is now held every two years with three changing subjects.
      

“In the Bachfest 2012, we will be showcasing our new programme for children, young people and families, “b@ch for us!”. The principal feature of this will be two concerts by our youth orchestra, made up of pupils from the Johann Sebastian Bach Music School in Leipzig and the Conservatorio Bologna. This broad-ranging, playful, educational and entertaining programme is set to make the Bachfest Leipzig a very special family event.

Holland Baroque Society is six years old! During all those beautiful, music-filled years we’ve regularly found ourselves collaborating with soloists and directors of great name and renown – such as violin virtuoso Rachel Podger, early-music star Emma Kirkby, composer Nico Muhly, singer/songwriter Teitur, as well as the complete Nederlands Kamerkoor. And some of those guests have become close friends, like flute-player Alexis Kossenko, who’s performed with us on several occasions. We recorded our second CD with Alexis, and he’ll be back next season with the music of CPE Bach. We’ve also built up a warm relationship with Milos Valent – clearly audible on our latest CD Barbaric Beauty, appearing in autumn 2011. Milos takes us along to a Polish tavern, where we meet Telemann, and get to know some dance music both barbaric and beautiful…
                   

The first Bach program in the new year will be the masterful St. Matthew Passion, presented February 24-27, 2012, and featuring tenor Wesley Rogers (Evangelista), baritone Joshua Copland (Christus), along with an octet of ABS vocal soloists including alto Danielle Reutter-Harrah, tenors Derek Chester and Aaron Sheehan, baritones Jesse Blumberg and Robert Stafford, and the American Bach Choir with members of the Pacific Boychoir.

Soprano Jessica Gould, Mezzo-soprano Meg Bragle, and the Salon/Sanctuary Chamber Ensemble perform recently discovered repertoire by Ferrandini, Pergolesi, and Ristori that tell the passion story through its two female protagonists. The concert is part of a weekend festival of Italian baroque discoveries that begins on Friday, 2/24, with Juilliard415 under the direction of Monica Huggett, in a performance of Concerti Grossi at The Abigail Adams Smith Auditorium.
  

“We begin with a tribute to a legendary musician and leader in the field of early music, a singer whose haunting voice moved the hearts and souls of audiences, and inspired many musicians to further explore repertoire rarely heard.  On November 23^rd, 2011, Montserrat Figueras died in Barcelona, Spain after a year-long battle with cancer.

“Summer School of Early Music is an Early Music course targeting the historically informed performance mainly of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Music. Some of the recorder classes concentrate on contemporary, world and folk music.

The workshop takes place every July in beautiful South Bohemian town Prachatice (130 km south from Prague, 200 km north-west from Vienna). In 2012 we will be there for the 14th time, until 1998 the course took place in Bechyně.
        

You will find “two new publications for you this month: a reprint of Cyril Beaumont's 'The Ballet called Swan Lake', a classic work on the world's most popular ballet, which should be read by all dancers, producers, musicians, historians and audiences; and a reprint of the 1924 English translation of Angelo Constantini's biography of Tiberio Fiorilli, an early commedia dell'arte player who is credited with creating the character Scaramouch. The 1924 edition of this beautiful book is exceptionally scarce, having been printed in an ediiton of only 390 copies.”
