Music for Pope Leo X
24/08/09 to 30/08/09

The course Music for Pope Leo X concentrates o­n the polyphonic repertoire from the early 16th century. Leo X was born as Giovanni de Medici and sat o­n the holy chair between 1513 and 1521. This music and art loving pope was a composer himself. He continued the evolution that his predecessor Pope Julius II had started. Under Leo X, the Papal Chapel’s ensemble became o­ne of the most highly renowned ensembles in Europe.

In this, their inaugural performance, the Chorus will be joined by young soloists from the Royal Northern College of Music in music by Purcell and Vivaldi.

(US) CLARION-COLLEGIUM WEEK 2009 SPOTLIGHTS THE ITALIAN BAROQUE

The Clarion Music Society and the New York Collegium team up for their second annual Clarion-Collegium Week of master classes in Baroque performance practice, lectures and a joint concert, all taking place from Thursday through Sunday, 19-22 February at St. Michael's Church, 225 West 99th Street (at Amsterdam Ave.). (See schedule below.)

The week will consist of six master classes taught by Andrew Parrott (voice), Cynthia Roberts (chamber music), Myron Lutzke (cello), Stephen Hammer (oboe), Sandra Miller (flute), and Robert Mealy (violin), and a concert featuring the principal players from the New York Collegium and the Clarion Orchestra joined by world-renowned tenor Rufus Müller.

Clarion-Collegium master classes are for students and young professionals from all over the United States. This year, there will be participants from all of the major New York conservatories as well as from schools as far away as California, North Carolina and New Hampshire. These master classes are designed not o­nly as a valuable educational experience for young musicians with a penchant for the Baroque, but also for audience members who wish to go behind the scenes and learn more about what goes into the preparation of an historically-informed performance. The country's leading Early Music specialists address all aspects of preparing for a performance, from developing the techniques to play authentic Baroque instruments to further exploring and understanding the musical tastes and palette of the Baroque period.
