Offering evidence of women's extensive contributions to the theatrical landscape, this volume sharply challenges the assumption that the stage was 'all male' in early modern England. The editors and contributors argue that the pervasiveness of female performance affected cultural production, even on the professional London stages that used men and boys for women's parts. English spectators saw women players in professional and amateur contexts, in elite and popular settings, at home and abroad. Women acted in scripted and improvised roles, performed in local festive drama, and took part in dancing, singing, and masquing. English travelers saw professional actresses on the continent and Italian and French actresses visited England.

The Lyrica Society invites abstracts for its 2011 Dialogues at Harvard, themed "France the Lewd--France the Prude / France Erotique--France Pudique" scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 1-2. Six panels, organized by historical periods (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern) will juxtapose moral, ethical, and aesthetic dimensions of religion and spirituality with sensual, sexual, and gendered eroticism in the confluence of French music and literature.

For some two and a half centuries, the Philippine Islands were firmly interlinked to Latin America and Spain through transoceanic relationships of politics, religion, trade, and culture.

(IT) Con la mente e con le mani - Teaching and Learning the Art of Counterpoint on the Keyboard (1585-1671) (18-20 Nov. 2010)
The Conference will be focused on Counterpoint teaching and learning in the Early Seicento.We would like to explore the link between Music Theory and Practice on the keyboard. Improvisation is the working tool for learning music structures. Different scholars will confront themselves with the topic, mixing up various perspectives.
The Seventeenth Annual Conference of the Italian Musicological Society will take place in Pisa in collaboration with Scuola Normale Superiore from 29 to 31 October 2010. On October, 30 all members will gather for their annual meeting.

A unique seminar in which students will undergo a total immersion in the theories and practices of a period that influenced enormously the development of music and musicians. The seminar will offer 7 days of intensive study, masterclasses and workshops in the lovely atmosphere of Felicia Blumental Music Center, in the heart of Tel Aviv.
Since its inception in the 1980s, the Biennial International Conference on Baroque Music has established itself as one of the largest and most important musicological meetings in the academic calendar. It attracts leading established scholars while fostering young and upcoming talent. Previously held in cities such as Dublin, Logroño, Manchester, Warsaw and Leeds, the event takes place for the first time in Northern Ireland.
We are pleased to announce the publication of two serenatas for solo voices and strings, both attributed to "Sig.r Scarlatti," in an edition by Marie-Louise Catsalis; see Nos. 17 of the WLSCM Catalogue. Two other editions are forthcoming in the very near future–please check back!

Dance is an integral part of the Amherst Early Music Festival (a two-week early music festival with a vast array of musical offerings). For the 2010 workshop, classes will be offered in Baroque Dance, Baroque Dance Notation, Renaissance Dance, and Music of Charpentier and Lully. Participants are also entitled to attend many other events (including English country dancing, concert and lectures) in the evenings that are part of the Amherst Early Music Festival.
