Workshops/Festivals 2009: (BE) Course Manneristic Madrigals of Monteverdi

Contributed by Musica on Nov 09, 2009

Fans of early music don’t need an introduction of Claudio Monteverdi. For a long time, he was known for the first unsurpassed highlights of the early Western opera. Yet, his operas did not raise eyebrows, his madrigal bundles did. An example: in the foreword of his fifth Madrigal bundle, we read the discussion between Artusi and Monteverdi whether or not to use the new monidistic style.

The madrigal bundles of Monteverdi are musical highlights, which bring a scala of human fealings. He experiments with his madrigal which results in a frequent use of chromatic, expressive harmonies and dissonants. In front is the exact musical representation of the text.

Jan Van Elsacker and Simen Van Mechelen explore these three- to eight- voice madrigals. The teachers mainly focus on text expression and ensemble singing.
