VICES & VIRTUES Passionate Music of Early Europe
PASSION will wind its musical way through June in Washington, as it has through centuries of music.
“This intriguing theme will unleash creative forces in our artists’ programming. We can look forward to emotional performances of sacred or secular passion – love, intrigue, jealousy, death, spirituality.
As has become a tradition, the Festival will offer events throughout the entire month of June. We invite you to take expeditions into the heart of D.C. to attend our concerts, visit museums, try new restaurants, stroll the neighborhoods.
The course is already full. But everyone is welcome to the free show moment on Sunday 25th March at 3 pm!

(Italian Renaissance and Baroque Dance“Fencing” Workshop)
“The Marguerite, whether flower, symbol or name, is the theme of the fourth summer internship organized by Bassa Toscana. … Like dance, fencing, as proposed at the initiation stage, meets the same rigor and beauty of movement in space. This discipline is found in early writings of the quattrocento in the manual "Flos Duellatorum" of Fiore dei Liberi. Thoinot Arbeau himself in "the Orchesographie" describes a war dance “Les Bouffons” where the current vocabulary of combat is already quoted (but dancing!). …”

Social Harmony -- When Traditional and High Art Music Meet“This year's festival looks at what happens when popular culture and high art meet and mingle: when tunes played at a peasant's wedding find their way into the music played at a castle feast, when hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes become the fashion at court and when baroque harp becomes the instrument of the people. A foot-tapping weekend of simple melody and complex harmony in the liveliest medieval town in Europe!”
“The original folk dance from the Friaul region (hence the name: friulana - furlana - Forlana) was popular towards the end of the 17th century. It was introduced by the composer André Campra at the French court and was immediately received with great enthusiasm - the theme of "Venice" was in vogue in Paris at that time.
This workshop can be registered without a partner.”

HANDEL AND THE RIVAL QUEENSChristian Curnyn writes...
“World-class performers gather to perform and compete for a fiercely partisan audience! Huge sums of money change hands! Fights break out between rival factions, and even politicians and royalty are swept up in the hysteria! Olympic London 2012? Let's wait and see... Operatic London 1726? Most definitely!

Location: Set in the soft green hills of the Mostviertel (Lower Austria), the → Benedictine abbey of Seitenstetten, founded in 1112, doesn't really show it's age: Famous 18th century artists like Paul Troger and Bartolomeo Altomonte gave it the handsome baroque face it still preserves today. The abbey and its famous baroque garden, perfect for relaxing between dance lessons, lend their atmosphere to our summer school.
Classes will be held in rooms of the abbey and the new Education Center St. Benedikt alternately. Students will be lodged in the Education Center's cosy hostel.
