"Founded in 1980, Hyperion is an independent British classical label devoted to presenting high-quality recordings of music of all styles and from all periods from the twelfth century to the twentieth. We have been described as 'Britain’s brightest record label'. In January 1996 we were presented with the Best Label Award by MIDEM's Cannes Classiques Awards. The jury was made up of the editors of most of the leading classical CD magazines in the world – Classic CD (England), Soundscapes (Australia), Répertoire (France), FonoForum (Germany), Luister (Holland), Musica (Italy), Scherzo (Spain), and In Tune (USA & Japan). We named our label after an altogether splendid figure from Greek mythology. Hyperion was one of the Titans, and the father of the sun and the moon – and also of the Muses, so we feel we are fulfilling his modern role by giving the art of music to the world." ...

"EMI Classics was formed in 1990 to provide a single overall trademark for the marketing of EMI's classical recordings worldwide. Previously, EMI's classical product had appeared on a number of different, albeit famous, labels such as His Master's Voice, Columbia, Angel, Odeon and others, but some of these were not available to EMI in every territory, while others had strong regional associations. The creation of EMI Classics, and the introduction of a uniform record numbering system, enabled all of EMI's classical releases, now with tri-lingual notes, to be included in a single international catalogue available throughout the entire world. EMI Classics' heritage goes back a hundred years, ... "

"Since 1987, Naxos has redefined how classical music is presented and marketed. Innovative strategies of recording exciting new repertoire with exceptional talent have enabled the label to develop one of the largest and fastest growing catalogues of unduplicated repertoire available anywhere--currently over 2500 titles--with state-of-the-art sound and consumer-friendly prices. Naxos is the brainchild of Klaus Heymann, a German-born entrepreneur and music lover based in Hong Kong. To boost the sales for his electronics equipment company, Heymann began organising concerts of classical music in Hong Kong sponsored by Bose and Revox. When visiting artists involved in the concerts discovered that their records could not be found in Hong Kong shops, record distribution became an additional enterprise of Heymann's company. ... "

"It was as a fairground attraction that gramophones first excited wide-eyed amazement at fairs and sideshows more than a century ago. Raucous slogans proclaimed the virtues of the new recording technology: "Most powerful sound, loudest sound, most natural sound." The new-fangled talking machines, with their primitive cylinders and discs, were initially sold only in toy shops and bicycle shops. The inventor of the gramophone and disc, Emile Berliner, was quick to recognize the potential of "automatic music" and set about using the new technology to bring art and artists directly into the homes of people who other wise had no access to music of this kind, His vision of the gramophone, both as a means of disseminating culture and as a form of entertainment, is uniquely reflected in the more than hundred-year history of Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft. ... I thought: why not make a record label that has a clue? That helps artists get exposure, make at least as much money they would make with traditional labels, and help them get fans and concerts. Magnatune is my project. The goal is to find a way to run a record label in the Internet Reality: file trading, Internet Radio, musicians' rights, the whole nine-yards. If you think Magnatune is a worthy goal, please support it. There are powerful forces who want it to fail, so I need your help if this is going to work. (Buckman, Magnatune founder/owner) " ...

Dr. Bradley P Lehman (doctorate in harpsichord, Univ of Michigan, 1994) / bpl@umich.edu " These samples are each approximately fifteen seconds long, files of about 300K, dubbed from compact discs. The "CD info" links each go to an appropriate entry at another site where you may learn more about or purchase the disc. In some cases, they also have better sound samples from these albums, using RealAudio or other formats. Major disclaimer! These sound samples (all in stereo) are of reasonable quality but are certainly not great: they do not represent accurately the sound quality of the recordings. They are here primarily for use in rough comparisons among the instruments: the basic features of the sound. The actual instruments sound quite a bit different, especially regarding high harmonics. If possible, play and listen to representative instruments in person, or find these and other similar recordings. On the plus side, all these samples are distorted similarly by the CD-sampling utility I used...it's a level playing field. The utility was an early one (1996), and I probably should remake all of these samples someday.... " ...

There are currently over 90,000 CD, DVD, SACD, Blu-ray Disc, and 320-kbps MP3 titles in the ArkivMusic database, shipping from over 20 distribution centers around the country. This distribution network allows ArkivMusic to have more titles in stock every day than any other online retailer, assuring the most expeditious delivery and largest selection of classical music.
In addition, ArkivMusic has more than 8,000 titles in its ArkivCD reissue program. These are recordings that have previously been out of print or otherwise unavailable.
The design for ArkivMusic emphasizes the ability to quickly and intuitively find classical music recordings. The peculiarities of classical music do not always lend themselves to standard search tools used on the Web. Spelling inconsistencies, differing search syntax designs, and databases not specifically oriented to the parameters of classical music can often lead to very confusing results. At ArkivMusic, we take a lot of the guesswork out of finding music by letting you click down a logical and well-categorized path to the works and recordings that you want.
The ArkivMusic staff is made up of experts in Internet technology, direct-to-consumer operations and logistics, customer service -- and most importantly, classical music! This unique combination enables ArkivMusic to provide exceptional service to classical music lovers in ways not available anywhere else.
ArkivMusic also publishes LISTEN: Life with Classical Music, America's quarterly lifestyle magazine about classical music.
ArkivMusic is a subsidiary of Steinway Musical Instruments, Inc.”

"Spain’s most international label, widely considered the world’s finest in early music, has its headquarters in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in the mountains near Madrid. Founded in 1992 by Carlos Céster and the brothers José Miguel and Emilio Moreno, it is a landmark not only on account of its extreme artistic coherence – with great names in early music among its exclusive performers, such as Paolo Pandolfo, La Venexiana, the Orchestra of the 18th Century, Le Concert Spirituel, Michael Noone, or the Moreno brothers themselves – but also because of its always innovative and exquisite formal proposals, such as the introduction of digipaks into classical music, the inclusion of multimedia tracks on some of its titles or, more recently, the presentation of the Glossa Platinum collection, with its avant-garde design. One of its most salient current projects is the integral recording of the madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi." ...

“For 25 years, Pavane is also an independent Belgian recording label, devoted exclusively to classical music.
Nearly 250 recordings have been published on compact disc. Many collaborations take place between the label and its artists. Prestigious laureats of the International Queen Elisabeth Competition of Belgium such as Youri Egorov, Cyprien Katsaris, Rudolph Werthen, have found an ideal and trusted partner with Pavane for the realisation of the recording projects that they held dear. These were followed by other laureats such as Alexander Melnikov, Evgeny Moguilevsky, Mikhaïl Bezverkhny, Mikhaïl Petukhov, Janet Thompson, Liviu Prunaru, ...
The rediscovery of Belgian composers also figures in the editorial priorities of Pavane, which recently published the first world-wide complete recording of the piano music of Joseph Jongen, as well as his string quartets. ..“ Visit website for more information. (ed.)

“ .. . The expression musica ficta first appeared in theoretical treatises dating back to the 13thcentury and defined the performance rules related to accidental chromaticism in modal composition. However, these rules are nowhere to be found on the scores. It is up to the musician to apply them where necessary. In practice, specialists do not always agree, and so all that remains is choosing the performer, his personality. Who is right? Does the question really require an answer? It would seem that the question of what moves us or appeals to us is far more interesting and compelling.
Musica Ficta translates into three or four releases per year, with performers being chosen for their commitment and musical qualities for original artistic projects both in terms of the repertoire and its approach.
The collection presents an interpretation of early music within our contemporary context.
Bernard Mouton” .. .

“ Founded in 1990, the label K617 has had such an impact because it has met a wide audience’s appetite for new discoveries. K617 has enabled us to discover the scope of Latin America’s Baroque music heritage whose richness bursts forth in the sumptuous series ‘Pathways of Baroque’. It has also skilfully associated with its systematic exploration of this repertoire a whole generation of performers, who although unknown yesterday, are today on a par with the greatest.
The perfect example is Gabriel Garrido, whose Latin American experience has nourished an entirely new vision of European baroque, which has found its finest testimony in his interpretations of the masterpieces of Claudio Monteverdi: ‘historically informed’ recordings of very well-known works which we rediscover from a new perspective.
However, K617, as a label based in Lorraine, very quickly realised that the Angel of the bizarre did not only brush faraway continents with its wings. Hence it is also responsible for the revival of ‘regional’ composers like Jean-François Tapray and especially Théodore Gouvy whose Requiem, which has sold over 25,000 copies, is now viewed as one of the major religious music works of the end of the nineteenth century.
Perhaps K617's secret is that it has never separated its production activity from its involvement with live music, always listening out for performers, researchers and all those who dream of being present at the birth of new emotions. A new manifestation of this is the National Month of Latin American Baroque Music, which every autumn now allows the whole of France to discover the new soundscapes of K.617.
Since the very beginning of the year 2003, K617 has been the leader of the activities of Le Couvent (Sarrebourg - France), where the Centre International des Chemins du baroque is located. But K617 is still developing its partnership with harmonia mundi.“ Visit website for more information. (ed.)

“The RAMÉE label was founded in 2004 by Rainer Arndt.
In only four years, RAMÉE has established itself as a greatly respected label on the Early Music scene. Many releases from its limited catalogue have been highly acclaimed by public and press alike, several receiving numerous awards. Each year sees the production of only six to eight recordings, featuring »hand-picked«, quality repertoire seldom or never-before recorded, or more well-known works in new and exceptional interpretations.
The small company maintains extremely high standards — not only in the aural aspect of the recording itself, but also in the musicological, literary, graphic and tactile quality of the jacket and liner notes.
RAMÉE creates cds as complete objets d'art, because they believe the ear's pleasure is intimately tied together with that of the eye and the hand. A collection for connaisseurs!“ Visit website for more information. (ed.)

“Do you own a gramophone? Can you play 78rpm discs? Many of these records have never previously been published. Others are major rarities in their original form.
Lilli Lehmann, Richard Tauber, John McCormack, Nellie Melba, Titta Ruffo, Dmitri Smirnoff, Joseph Schmidt, Feodor Chaliapine, Geraldine Farrar, Lev Klementieff, Vanni Marcoux, Jacques Urlus, Beniamino Gigli, Jussi Bjorling and Celestina Boninsegna – our list goes on and on!
Our records are pressed from the original metal parts used for pressing the discs in the days of 78s. They are not transfers or dubbings. Thus they are identical to original pressings, but instead of noisy shellac, we use vinyl which has a much lower surface noise. That means more of the music can be heard. And, modern technology enables us to produce better pressings than could be made 50 or more years ago.“
