“Before starting with this database, I had indices of only a few manuscripts and a whole series of concordances lying scattered around. Then Markus Lutz sent around his compilation of Weiss' works with concordances, with the request to check the concordances, and the spark was generated to put some system in the information I had lying around, using Markus' info as the starting point, amplifying the project to other non-Weiss manuscripts. First of all, I chose a manuscript-based setup, and for each manuscript in my possession I listed the contents, along with the key in which the pieces were given. Where present, the manuscript-own page numbering was followed, while for others and ad-hoc numbering was applied. ..“

Francesco Durante was a highly respected composer and teacher during the first half of the 18th century in Naples. He chose to concentrate on sacred music rather than the more fashionable opera composition favoured by other Neapolitans and his works became examples of 'good composition' used for teaching.

Durante was primo maestro at the two major Conservatorii in Naples S Onofrio and S Maria di Loreto and taught composers ranging from Sacchini to Piccini and Paisiello. Not a composer of a large quantity of work, his music exhibits great skill and invention and a dramatic flair well suited to the style of music he chose to write. ... The database of the Goettingen Bach Catalogue has been maintained by the Bach-Archiv in Leipzig since August 2008.

In addition to database records for all known Bach sources, detailed descriptions of manuscripts along with handwriting samples and watermark tracings will be provided by nearly every German library. "In twenty-eight years we have built up a collection of about 700 titles which cover practically every aspect of musical literature and of various repertoires stretching from the 15th to the 19th centuries and even the 20th century including:

* instrumental tablatures (especially for lute, guitar, viol and organ)
* facsimiles of particularly important manuscripts (15th-20th centuries)

The works listed in the present catalogue have been chosen for their practical values as well as for their rarity. Most will be of interest not only to musicologists but also to musicians concerned with rediscovering authentic early performance practices. The resolution of many a controversy about the interpretation of early music is hindered by the inaccessibility of the relevant sources. Two or more works have occasionally been printed together in the same volume, when their subjects were related, with the aim of reducing their price. Forewords more or less developed (in English and in French) have been supplied, for the manuscripts series especially, to explain the choice of the work or the edition, to facilitate its use and to provide information on the author and his work.

Besides the Reprints, this catalogue includes many original works, most notably four important continuing series:

“There are hundreds of printed and manuscript books of music for plucked-string instruments from the late fifteenth century through the end of the eighteenth century. Most of these sources were written for the lute or guitar; there were also a few books for lesser-known plucked string instruments: the vihuela, cittern, bandora, mandora, and orpharion, as well as instruments related to the lute such as the arch-lute and theorbo. This site concentrates primarily on sources that employ a notational system called "tablature." Sources which can be played on these instruments but are in standard notation (such as those calling for continuo accompaniment) are not generally included.

The list contains basic bibliographical information for as many of these tablatures as I can find. Sources used include various volumes in the Répertoire international des sources musicales (RISM) series, the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2000), and Howard Mayer Brown's Instrumental Music Printed before 1600: A Bibliography (Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University Press, 1965). A variety of other sources were used as well, cited in the bibliographies for each entry, and new sources have come to light since the publication of the core bibliographic works.

This remains a work-in-progress, but I felt the inclusion of manuscripts and materials outside the sixteenth century was important enough to warrant a basic list, however incomplete. I currently have a list of prints and manuscripts from the late fifteenth century to 1800 (the RISM series cutoff) and will be completing information for this list and adding it to the page over the next few weeks. Detailed information on the tablatures will only be available from the sources I have studied either first-hand or from copies and will thus take much, much longer (I am beginning with the tablatures c1500).

"Saraband Music is located in Kilcoy, QLD, Australia. Saraband Music began in 1994, selling sheet music and facsimiles, strings and CDs. Publishing began in 1996. In 2004, the business changed to mainly publishing, and the string business was sold to Ian Watchorn in Melbourne. From 2007, Saraband Music continued to publish early music under both the Saraband and Hammer & Tongs Reproductions imprints, and introduced a new range of music and interesting products for customers, including antiquarian maps and cards. A private collection of old books, including many first editions is also being sold.

Saraband Music is owned by Patrice Connelly, who has the degree of M.Mus (Hons) from the University of Sydney. She plays and teaches viola da gamba, and has edited music for viols published by Dovehouse Editions (Canada), PRB Productions (California) and the Viola da Gamba Society of Great Britain, and written articles and reviews for a number of journals. Her early musical studies were undertaken at the Conservatorium High School in Sydney, before progressing to the Music Department at the University of Sydney. She began playing piano at the age of 8, and violin at age 12. During her B.Mus, she also played viola before giving up both violin and viola for the viola da gamba.
