"Bach Collegium San Diego brings back a great holiday tradition with its annual performances of Handel’s beloved oratorio, Messiah. The 2015 performances will feature a complete London version from the early 1750s, highlighting the oratorio’s historical connections with London’s Foundling Hospital.  ...

“We are honored to highlight the historical connection between Handel’s Messiah and charity,” said music director Ruben Valenzuela. “During Handel’s lifetime, London’s Foundling Hospital was an important advocate for children, and in our own time Rady Children’s Hospital serves a similar role in the lives of children. Musically, this also gives us an opportunity to explore Handel’s Foundling Hospital Version of Messiah from the 1750s, when he performed the work in the chapel of Foundling Hospital as a charity concert.”

BCSD will donate 10 percent of its ticket proceeds from Messiah performances to Rady Children’s Hospital, and invite the audience to donate directly as well, via a return envelope that will be given out in the programs.
