Workshops/Festivals 2017: (UK) London Festival of Baroque Music (LFBM) 2017 "A Glimpse of Who's Coming to the UK in May"

the exciting performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers we’ve booked in for Sunday 14 May, featuring the considerable combined talents of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis. Now though, it’s time to tell you a little about some of the other guests we’ll be welcoming from abroad in 2017.
Let’s start with Les Passions de l’Ame, a dynamic string ensemble from Bern in Switzerland, led by violinist Meret Lüthi and fielding an international line-up of talented young musicians. Although not so well known in the UK yet, they’ve already performed widely in Europe to great acclaim, and when their first CD ‘Spicy!’ came out in 2014 it won great reviews and a Diapason d’or award. No doubt many an ear was caught by its striking addition of Turkish percussion to familiar works by Biber and Schmelzer – an imaginative reflection of the fascination many in 17th-century Austria felt for the soundworld of the Ottomans, even when Vienna was under siege from their armies – but even when the dulcimers, darabukas and cymbals are silent this is a group whose energy and enthusiasm are pretty hard to resist. They’ll be bringing a similar programme of Biber, Schmelzer, Fux and others to LFBM on Wednesday 17 May, for what should be quite a night.  
There are more exotic sounds around on Saturday 13 May. First, in our afternoon concert at St Peter’s Eaton Square, there’ll be a chance to hear a 26-year-old French harpsichordist who’s really attracting attention at the moment. Jean Rondeau began to playing the harpsichord at age of six, and 15 years later won First Prize at the Bruges International Harpsichord Competition. The Washington Post has since hailed him as ‘a master of his instrument with the sort of communicative gifts normally encountered in musicians twice his age’. His most recent CD, warmly received in the classical press, featured flamboyant virtuoso harpsichord music by Rameau and Royer, and it is this repertoire that he will play for us in May. The CD, by the way, borrowed its title from one of the Royer pieces, ‘Le Vertigo’ – one more good reason to include it in ‘Baroque at the Edge’!
As well as being a distinguished interpreter of Baroque music, Jean is an excellent improviser and jazz pianist, so when we heard that he regularly plays harpsichord in a trio with two other superb improvising musicians – lutenist Thomas Dunford and classical Persian percussionist Keyvan Chemirani – it looked like we just had to invite them to perform in this year’s Late o’Clock Baroque concert, also on Saturday 13 May. The trio call their collaboration ‘Jasmin Toccata’, and describe their unique melding of Persian percussion and Baroque instruments featuring European masters such as Scarlatti and Purcell as well as major Persian composers as ‘a vivid toccata that echoes the sensuality of Jasmin’. Mmm!" ...
