Early Music Concerts 2010-2011: (CA) "Il Mio Sole" - Tactus Vocal Ensemble Concert (2011 March 12)

An evening of sublime music will be performed in the magnificent spaces of Guelph’s Church of Our Lady Immaculate. Guest organist Christiaan Teeuwsen joins TACTUS to perform works chosen mainly from the Italian Renaissance.

There is a strong connection between the composers featured in our concert and the acoustically brilliant Sistine Chapel. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, champion of Rome's Counter Reformation, needs little introduction to lovers of early music. His student, the Spaniard, Tomas Luis de Victoria will be also represented.

TACTUS is especially excited to present movements from Missa Che fa oggi il mio sole by Gregorio Allegri. To the best of our knowledge, this music has never been performed in Canada. Written for five parts, two of them treble voices, there is a soaring yet calm beauty to be heard in this mass. Many will have opportunities to hear Allegri's huge Lenten hit, Miserere mei, in the weeks leading to Easter. (You know the one -plainchant, multiple soprano high C's.) It is our hope that you will enjoy becoming acquainted with more of Allegri's Sistine Chapel choral music.

Composers from the Venetian school, Giovanni Croce and Claudio Monteverdi, will also be represented. For even greater contrast, the Reproaches for Tenebrae of John Sanders will be sung. Written for the superb acoustics of Gloucester Cathedral, we believe that the Reproaches will electrify an audience in the grandeur of Church of Our Lady.

We hope to see you!
