The course is designed for solo singers who would enjoy a chamber music experience and choral singers who like the challenge of singing one on a part. The music will come from the 18th, 19th and 20th century vocal chamber music for various voices and piano. Emphasis will be on interpretation and ensemble skills while bringing music to performance level. A concert will be scheduled for the conclusion of the course.

Longy Summer Early Dance Workshop
Instructor:
Ken Pierce
Meets:
Sunday, July 24 3:30–5:30,
Monday–Friday, July 25–29 9:00–6:00 (lunch break 12:15–1:00)
Saturday, July 30 10:00–5:00 (lunch break t.b.d.)

An intensive workshop in early dance, with emphasis on baroque dance but also including a daily late-renaissance dance class. Intended for experienced dancers with a serious interest in early dance, the workshop will include classes in technique, repertoire, and dance notation, with opportunities for independent projects and performance. The early dance workshop will run concurrently with the International Baroque Institute at Longy (IBIL), allowing the possibility of joint performances with IBIL students. Dancers are welcome to attend IBIL lectures and performances as the schedule allows.

To complement this year’s IBIL theme, “Le Parnasse François”, the 2011 workshop will focus on French dances from the reign of Louis XIV. Especially, we will look at dances from before 1710, with emphasis on dances found in manuscript sources. These will include ballroom and theatrical dances in Beauchamp-Feuillet notation as well as dances in Favier notation, from Le Mariage de la Grosse Cathos.

This year's renaissance dance classes will be based on French sources, including Arbeau’s Orchesographie and the anonymous Instruction pour Dancer.
