(DE) Danserey  Popular

"In 1551 the Dutch publisher Tilman Susato issued a book with tunes: "daer inne begrepen syn alderhande danserye". These words "a lot of dances" are the source of our name Danserey, under which we already demonstrated our dances on a lot of historical festivals throughout Bavaria/Germany.

The Danserey Landshut is a group which is performing demonstrations of dances and music out of the Renaissance in historical costumes.

We are meeting regularly in the VHS Landshut to learn new dances and to work on our program. For sure, we also enjoy just having fun. " Visit website for more information. (ed.)

(CA) La Belle Danse  Popular

" La Belle Danse Baroque Dance Company was founded in 1996 under the artistic direction of choreographer and dancer Daniel Gariépy. The company is devoted to bringing to life the beauty of baroque dance.

Using original 18th century sources as our starting point, we also create unique, innovative works that honour the spirit and traditions of the past while building bridges to new audiences today. Our performances have been hailed by the critics as: "stylistically flawless and lovely to behold."

"The eight dancers of La Belle Danse were perfectly in tune with the period style, and enhanced and illustrated the emotions of the music."

Combining the ethos of baroque dance with our own contemporary creativity, we seek to foster an understanding and appreciation of this unique art form. We strive to create and perform works that are accessible, enlightening and inspiring. " Visit website for more information. (ed.)

(UK) Capriol Society for Early Dance

“The Society, founded in 1979, exists to encourage the revival and enjoyment of historical dancing. Classes are held weekly on Tuesday evenings from 19:45–21:45 in Cambridge, England. All classes include some dances suitable for beginners, who are always welcome. It is not necessary to bring a partner or to wear period dress. What you will need, if you join the class, is shoes that have a soft and flexible sole. Jazz shoes are suitable (but make sure the sole is chrome suede, not plastic or smooth leather), as are Greek sandals and Scottish dance shoes (ghillies).

Teaching is given mainly in Mediæval and Renaissance dancing, as practised at the courts of Europe in the 14th–17th centuries, but some attention is also paid to the dance styles of the 18th and 19th centuries.”

(UK) Coranto Early Dance and Music

“Coranto Early Dance & Music was founded in 1991 by Diana Scrivener.   Since then, it has specialized in performances of period dance and music, because as Artistic Director, Diana believes very strongly that excellence of demonstration, authenticity of style and increased awareness of this important aspect of history should be promoted at every opportunity.

To this aim, the group has given numerous performances, both informal and formal, to a wide cross-section of the public and in a variety of venues country-wide.  This has allowed the social dancing of our ancestors to remain the vital and dynamic art-form that it truly deserves to be, by exposing it to audiences who, in other circumstances, might not experience, or have any knowledge of this type of dance.

Coranto was a recipient in the first round of the A4E Express Awards, supported by the National Lottery, through the Arts Council of England.“

(UK) The Villiens Dance Company

“Formed in early 2011, the Villiens Dance Company are friends who have come together seeking to portray historical dances.

While we focus mainly on the dances that would have been known in year 1588, we also develop a repetoire of dances from medieval times to the 17th Century.

As a group we portray mainly the middle class (then known as the 'middling sort') and the lower gentry as they would have been in the year 1588. We take great care to authenticity and accuracy in our dances, costume and presentation.”

(UK) Renaissance Footnotes

“We are primarily a tudor reenactment group but also cover earlier and later periods. We specialise in portraying the domestic pastimes of the period - particularly the music and dance.

We practice and perform the social and court dances of the Renaissance covering the 15th century, 16th century and 17th century, more specifically the period between 1450 and 1650. The group was started in 1991 by people from a number of historical recreation societies (English Civil War Society, White Company, Sealed Knot, etc.) who were interested in learning the dances of the periods in history which those societies portrayed. The group has a wealth of experience putting on domestic living history events covering a wide variety of activities including our core specialities of music, dance, period costume and period cooking and dining. Our dancers and reenactors mainly participate in living history events covering the Tudor period, both Henrician and Elizabethan, but also cover the medieval, Jacobean and Stuart periods up to the English civil war. …”
