(US) Tableau - Ensemble for Early Music

“Founded in 2006 by artistic directors Ian Howell and Henry Lebedinsky, Tableau Baroque is an American chamber music ensemble dedicated to bringing music of the Baroque to life through emotionally connected, historically informed, illuminating performances. The ensemble’s members met while performing regularly with groups such as the American Bach Soloists, Musica Angelica, the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, and Seraphic Fire. Their mutual admiration blossomed into projects exploring small ensemble music of the Baroque. Previous programs include: Bach, All in the Family – vocal and instrumental music from three generations of the Bach family, Handel’s Inheritance – a musical journey through the formative years of G.F. Handel’s life, and Like a White and Melodious Swan – music from 17th century Italian convents. Tableau Baroque has mounted tours from Maine to Florida and has been presented at Summer festivals by both Seraphic Fire and the Whidbey Island Music Festival.”

The choice of Lucca as a location is not by chance: Luigi Boccherini was born in Lucca, so it is the natural site on which to launch the Italian National Edition of Luigi Boccherini's Complete Works. The Centro Studi also hosts the work of the Italian National Edition of the Opera omnia of Pietro Antonio Locatelli and the musicological series Speculum Musicae, Studies on Italian Music History and Monumenta Musica Europea. (FR) Centre d’Études des Théâtres de la Foire et de la Comédie-Italienne

Centre for the Study of the Fairground Theatres and the Comédie-Italienne

The Centre was created in 1999 by Françoise Rubellin, professor at the University of Nantes, following the international colloquium entitled “Les théâtres de la Foire 1678-1762”, with the support of two great specialists, Barry Russell from England (creator of the website foires.net) and David Trott from Canada, both deceased. The original project was to create a lasting link between researchers who were geographically dispersed, and to favour an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together theatre, music and dance: the Fairground plays are more show libretti than simple literary, textual objects.

Today, the Centre extends its research and its publications to the repertory of the Comédie-Italienne, having as a priority to edit manuscripts of plays that have never been re-edited, and to restore their musical dimension.

  • The Centre is working on the publication of several plays still in manuscript versions only of the Fairground theatres and the Comédie-Italienne in the form of separate editions or of collections.
  • The Centre is currently undertaking research on parodies of opera, with the support of the ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche), the Région Pays de la Loire and the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Ange-Guépin.
  • The Centre trains numerous students in research during their MA and PhD theses, and provides access for them to an important number of microfilms of unedited plays, as well as a specialised collection of documents.
  • The members of the Centre (PhD candidates and MA students included) publish articles and present papers in colloquia in France and abroad.
  • The Centre actively collaborates with specialised researchers in the field of Fairground theatres and the Comédie-Italienne in France and abroad (Italy, United Kingdom, Canada, United States, etc.).
  • The Centre works in partnership with several cultural structures dedicated to music and theatre, in Nantes and in the region Pays de la Loire (Angers Nantes Opéra, Le Grand T, La Folle Journée of the CRÉA) as well as with ensembles (Hugo Reyne’s Simphonie du Marais) and troupes (Thierry Pillon’s L’Éternel Éphémère, Chantal David’s Bel Viaggio). With them, we put into place activities for communication, creation and research development.
  • The Centre has organised, for over ten years, a monthly seminar, study days and colloquia.

“The Age of Philosophy saw a surge of interest in empirical science, humanistic inquiry, and cosmopolitan societies. It also witnessed a surprising fascination with ancient mythologies, alchemy, divine arcana, and secret societies. Did this dark side of the Enlightenment have anything in common with the rational undertakings of the day, or was it a remnant from times past? This digital archive will allow students and scholars to explore the strange, yet uncannily familiar, writings of French authors who went beyond John Locke's famed "limits of human understanding," in order to investigate the mysterious perimeters of knowledge - but often progressed with the same wit and epistemological concerns as Parisian philosophes. The ideas and practices of these writers (often dismissed as "illuminist") may thus best be understood as constituting a sort of "Super-Enlightenment," a category which begs a larger, open question: did the more orthodox Enlightenment thinkers ever cross over to the other side themselves?”

“Juilliard’s graduate-level Historical Performance program was established in September 2009, achieving immediate recognition as one of the leading programs of its kind. The department’s faculty members include many renowned performers, scholars, writers, and teachers in the field of period-instrument practice, as well as the members of Juilliard Baroque, one of four resident ensembles at Juilliard.

As a student in the tuition-free program, you will work closely with our dedicated faculty members and enjoy regular performance opportunities of a wide variety of repertoire for small and large ensembles and solo recitals in a number of public venues. Juilliard415, the School’s student period-instrument ensemble, performs works from the 17th and 18th centuries in concert venues at Lincoln Center and beyond. “Statement of Purposes

  1. To provide a full-time Fellowship in research:
    1. Analysis of Bach's music and historical treatises pertaining to the roots and development of his form and structure.
    2. The influences of past cultural and religious traditions on his music and thought.
    3. His influence on contemporary composers and their productions.

      The period of the Fellowship is to equal one to two semesters duration. Preference will be given but not limited to Fellows with newly-acquired Ph.D. degrees in Musicology, Performance, or Composition. This grant will also be available to established scholars of distinction.
  2. To provide a full-time Fellowship in research in disciplines other than music on the conceptual and/or structural relationships of these concepts in Bach's music and other disciplines such as mathematics, physics, and other scientific disciplines. This grant will be available solely for established international scholars. The period of the Fellowship is to equal one or two semesters duration.
  3. To further the studies of promising young performers:
    1. In multiple levels of technique in all media in solo instrumental, solo vocal, choral, and ensemble.
    2. In far-ranging musicological requirements in study of Bach's music.
    3. On period and contemporary instruments.
  4. To provide grants:
    1. For the continuing organization and completion of Rosalyn Tureck's numerous articles and essays. These grants will be available on application to graduate students working on their Ph.D. degrees or on their first year following the successful completion of their Ph.D. thesis.
    2. For the completion of Rosalyn Tureck's unfinished editions and books. The first of the grants has been awarded to Zachariah Mark Victor, a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at the Yale University School of Music.
      These grants will be available to established scholars in cooperation with performers, where desirable.
  5. The awards for each of these Fellowships to be selected by the Tureck Bach Research Institute Musical Consultants and endorsed by chairmen of University departments of Performance, Musicology, and Composition.
  6. The Fellowships and Grants to be known as the Rosalyn Tureck Awards.
