"At first sight La Folia already looks like an interesting building constructed quietly in the course of centuries on the foundations of earlier settlements. It's a great experience to see that the development of the numerous fascinating elements and delicate details is consuming composers, performers and listeners alike as an anchor in musical thought, like a cathedral built during centuries.

For those people who are interested in the folia theme there is a disturbing lack of good sources. The information available is very superficial and can only be found in very general reference works and review articles, apart from the scientifical study by Richard Hudson (see literature) which is only available at specialized conservatories and where the focus is on the transition of the early to the later folia. This website is an effort to collect as much relevant information as possible on la folia. Every contribution, be it a new line of approach, a suggestion or a discussion will be welcomed. Added to that it is almost impossible for one person to check all musical new releases for possible new variations of la folia.

This website was built in the hope that from every part of the world new discoveries will get their names here in the inventory, so that they will be part of a collective musical tradition and awareness.

“The revelation of a vanished musical continent

It is a source of pride for the K617 label honour to have been the promoter and driving force behind a crucial musicological discovery: the missing portion of the universal phenomenon of Baroque music, born beyond the oceans, which had been thought lost forever. Now imitated by others (but never equalled!), this policy was immediately backed by the AFAA (Association Française d’Action Artistique, a division of the French Foreign Ministry) and the Fondation Paribas (now Fondation BNP PARIBAS). "Aliénor promotes new music for the harpsichord through concerts, commissions and a competition.

The "Aliénor Harpsichord Composition Competition" was started in 1980 under the aegis of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society (SEHKS). Aliénor is now an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Donations are tax-deductible. Aliénor runs the quadrennial harpsichord composition competition, publishes winning compositions, and commission new works for the harpsichord. There have been six competitions thus far, with over 400 new scores generated from composers around the world. "In any profession, the move from student to practitioner is always difficult and if you are a talented young baroque musician, difficult might sometimes seem like impossible. The problem is one of experience: to work with a top orchestra you need experience, but you can’t get the experience you need without working with a top orchestra. EUBO bridges this ‘experience gap’.

Every year EUBO invites 100 talented young baroque musicians from across Europe to take part in one of the three-day audition courses. The 29 successful candidates, usually from at least 13 EU countries with an average age of 24 years, then spend six months together, training, touring and performing throughout Europe and further afield under the world’s leading baroque specialists.

At the end of each year, the students of EUBO move on into the professional world and the whole process from audition to graduation, begins again.
