(US) Washington Early Music Festival

“This biennial event is designed for a wide audience, and particularly for lovers of early music from the medieval to the baroque, dance and visual arts. Thanks to the widespread and generous support of people in our community WEMF has been successful since its inaugural year, June 2004. A different country or cultural focus is featured each year. Past festivals were:

  • 2004 “Music of England”
  • 2005 “Spain and the New World”
  • 2006 “Musica Antica d’Italia,” – Music of Italy
  • 2008 “From Hildegard to Bach” – Early Music Masterpieces from Germany
  • 2010 “La Musique Magnifique” – Early Music Masterpieces from France

In 2006, we decided to move to an every other year format, to alternate years with the Boston Early Music Festival, and provide more time for development and planning.

In 2007, we initiated a special weekend of events in response to the public demand for “a taste of early music” on the “off” year. We continued this in 2009 with a Gala Concert featuring eight performing groups in one concert evening.

Our programs seek to be diverse and inclusive of many aspects of musically-centered culture. We include lectures, special art tours based on the Festival’s theme, post-concert receptions to encourage discussion between audience and performers, demonstrations of period instruments, and workshops that have focused on – dance, medieval and renaissance; instrumental, baroque and medieval; vocal, renaissance/baroque choral, medieval chant. …”

(CR) Festival de Música Antigua de Costa Rica

“Medieval music, Renaissance and Baroque, known as early music, has acquired in recent decades increasingly important. Today the practice of early music is based on specialized interpreters in musicological research on the technical implementation and interpretation of ancient instruments and singing in the reconstruction of musical instruments from specimens preserved in museums and implementation of transcripts, respectful of the canons of writing of the time. Our country has not been indifferent to the interest in this music, demonstrated in large musical centers of the world, and for several years there are groups devoted to this repertory. The Early Music Festival offers the opportunity to discover the wide and varied repertoire of these centuries, but with instruments constructed according to ancient models. In this way we approach a sound unknown in the country.

This festival began in 2006 as an idea of the composer Otto Castro. Originally took place every two years, but due to the enthusiasm of the crowd then decided to hold annual events that take place in the first half of each year. From the 2008 it was decided to accept only groups that use old-style instrument. The festival has become a benchmark in the Caribbean area. The guests give lectures, master classes and concerts. Thus, his teaching and exchange of ideas among participants, promoting growth and generating conceptual connections.“ (Translated with the aid of Google Translate)
