(US) Colorado Recorder Orchestra

“The Colorado Recorder Orchestra was formed in summer 2004, and had its debut performance at the Early Music Colorado “Fall Festival of Early Music” in October, 2004. In 2005 and 2006 there have been many performances in the Denver area and surrounding communities, and an appearance at the EMC “Fall Festival of Early Music” in October 2005.

The orchestra was organized by leaders from three Colorado chapters of the American Recorder Society who have formed the governing board for the orchestra. The goal was to provide a challenging musical adventure for more advanced recorder players. When first organized, the ensemble was called, “Front Range Recorder Orchestra.” This has been changed to Colorado Recorder Orchestra, since it is the only one in the state. The director of the Colorado Recorder Orchestra is Rose Marie Terada. The group is made up of volunteers. Players, board members, and the director all volunteer their time for the recorder orchestra. ..“

Ms. Mor has been seen in performances throughout Europe, Israel and the United States both as a soloist and as ensemble/band member. (US) Desert Pipes (Phoenix Chapter of the ARS)

"Desert Pipes is the Phoenix Chapter of the ARS. We currently have around two dozen members of all ages. Chapter activities include monthly meetings and rehearsals. We also sponsor workshops given by leading recorder teachers including the Farallon Quartet, Letitia Berlin, Vicki Boeckman, and the Wood 'n' Flutes trio. Our repertoire for monthly playing sessions is generally Renaissance and early Baroque music at an intermediate level, but we have resources for players of all levels of ability. Membership fee is $50 per year for members of the American Recorder Society and $60 for others, or $5 per meeting for part-year residents or drop-ins. "The East Bay Recorder Society is an association of recorder enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay area. Recorder players from low intermediate to advanced levels are invited to join to play music together and to learn more about the recorder. Membership activities include the following:

“The Farallon Recorder Quartet gives inspiring performances of a vast and varied repertoire extending across time and genre. Bach and Gershwin, Ockeghem and Serocki; sedate, wild, sublime, Farallon Recorder Quartet does it all with style, reaching out to modern audiences in an accessible and exciting manner. Farallon's debut CD, a collection of sacred and secular works by the 16th century composer Ludwig Senfl, was released in 2005. The Farallon Recorder Quartet performs on numerous types of recorder from Medieval to modern, from sopranino to contrabass, from 6 inches to 6 feet tall. While devoting much of their concert programs to Renaissance and Baroque music, Farallon Recorder Quartet is also active in performing 20th and 21st century music, both well established works, and newly composed pieces, some of which have been written for the ensemble.

"The New Amsterdam Recorder Trio (NewART) performs medieval, renaissance, baroque and modern music, as well as arrangements of traditional/world music, and their collection of instruments numbers more than two dozen recorders from makers around the world. "Nina Stern is one of North America’s leading performers of the recorder and classical clarinet. In recent years she is also hailed as an innovator in teaching school-age children to be fine young musicians. A native New Yorker, Ms. Stern studied with Jeanette van Wingerden and Hans-Rudolf Stalder at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland, where she received a Soloist’s Degree. From Basel, she moved to Milan, Italy where she was offered a teaching position at the Civica Scuola di Musica. Ms. Stern performs regularly as soloist or principal player with prestigious ensembles such as The New York Philharmonic, New York City Opera, The New York Collegium, Concert Royal, Philharmonia Baroque, Sinfonia NY, American Classical Orchestra and Boston Baroque, She has also appeared as principal player with Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, L’Orchestra della Scala (Milan), I Solisti Veneti, Hesperion XX and Tafelmusik. Her numerous festival and concert series appearances have included performances under leading conductors such as Loren Maazel, Kurt Masur, Christopher Hogwood, Trevor Pinnock, Claudio Scimone, Jane Glover, Bruno Weil, Ton Koopman, Andrew Parrot and Jordi Savall. She has recorded for Erato, Harmonia Mundi, Sony Classics, Newport Classics, Wildboar, Telarc and Smithsonian labels. "Recorders/Early Music MetroWest was founded in 1999 as BRS-West (a satellite program of the Boston Recorder Society) to encourage consort playing and musician development in Boston’s western suburbs. Now an independent organization and a chapter of the American Recorder Society in our own right, we have completed eight successful seasons, averaging 45-50 players each month, with four or five coaches on hand at most meetings. Our members range in age from 17 to 70, and come from communities in New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Central Massachusetts as well as the metroBoston area. The Rio Grande Recorders are a  group of music enthusiasts in the Las Cruces, NM and El Paso, TX areas, who get together several times a month to play a wide variety of music. Our main meeting is o­n the second Thursday of every month at Good Samaritan Village in Las Cruces—entrance o­n Buena Vida—from 7:00-9:00 PM.

We are a chapter of the American Recorder Society .  Performances include music from the renaissance and baroque periods, as well as a variety of other music.

Chapter activities include:

  • Semi-monthly meetings/rehearsals, where we play music including rennaissance, baroque, and a variety of other types of music.
  • Concerts throughout the year, including performances at the Good Samaritan Society and Las Cruces RenFaire in November. 
  • Bi-annual week-end early music workshop for recorders and violas de gamba, featuring classes from professional, nationally-known musicians.

(US) Sacramento Recorder Society (SRS)

"The Sacramento Recorder Society is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization. It is a chapter of the American Recorder Society and an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society. We welcome recorder players of all ages and abilities as well as players of other early music instruments such as lutes, viols, sackbuts, shawms, curtals, krummhorns, and percussion. Beginners are urged to study privately to learn fingerings and become comfortable reading music before joining the recorder orchestra.

We meet monthly September through June, from 6:45-10:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, at the Friends Meeting House, 890 57th St., between H and J. Most of our meetings are conducted by a professional early music specialist who teaches recorder technique and relevant music history and theory while exploring music of many eras.

"A chapter of the national organization, the American Recorder Society, the San Diego County Recorder Society (SDCRS) has been in existence since 1972. A membership organization, SDCRS supports the recreational playing and performance of recorders and other early music instruments.

SDCRS meets monthly to play ensemble music from medieval to 20th century with professional conductors. Our monthly chapter meetings are held in the afternoon on the third Saturday (usually) of the month from September through June.

“We are best described as a recorder ensemble, although we sometimes bring along other instruments such as dulcians, crumhorns, and drums. Our group includes members of all skill levels from beginners to professionals. We play music from a wide variety of genres, from renaissance dances to tin pan alley. Most of the music we play is from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Our monthly meetings consist of reading through music, so if you are a little rusty at sight reading, then contact Richard so that you can get ahold of next month's music before the meeting. If you have several instruments there is always the opportunity to switch parts between pieces.  ..“
