(DE) Bärenreiter

"Bärenreiter is one of the largest publishers of classical music worldwide. Its extensive publication programme encompasses not only standard concert repertoire, but also educational music, contemporary music as well as music books.

From the beginning Bärenreiter has been working towards clear goals: to make a significant contribution to musical culture and to preserve the heritage of European music. So how did Bärenreiter set about to achieve these goals? It was Karl Vötterle's ingenious idea to create the concept of the New Complete Editions. He embarked upon an ambitious project to collect and publish the entire output of numerous composers, keeping to their original intentions.

Bärenreiter has been a pioneer in the publication of new scholarly Editions. Through the New Complete Editions Bärenreiter sets the musical standards for others to follow. In order to make these standards accessible to all practising musicians, without compromising the high quality musicological content, Bärenreiter publishes a comprehensive range of Practical Urtext Editions. "Welcome to the American Institute of Musicology. Founded by Armen Carapetyan in 1946, AIM supports interest in Medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque music. The publications of the Institute are used by scholars and performers alike and constitute a major core collection of early music and theoretical writings on music. Since its founding, the Institute has published more than 650 scholarly volumes including the yearbook Musica Disciplina.

The publications of the Institute are wide-ranging and comprise scholarly editions, books, and treatises. The scholarly editions include the complete works of major composers who lived up until the seventeenth century, composers such as Machaut, La Rue, Dufay, Willaert, Clemens, Rore, Compère, Crecquillon, Romero, and others. (See CMM for sacred and secular music and CEKM for keyboard music). Significant research findings resulting from the edition-making efforts are published in the series MSD. Published treatises include the works of influential writers from Guido of Arezzo to Jean Philippe Rameau. (See CSM and MISC). Significant collections of papers appear in MISC. Reference works are published in the series RMS. The Institute is continually accepting new book and edition proposals.

The Haenssler-Verlag, Neuhausen-Stuttgart, Germany, assumed responsibility for the publication program of the American Institute of Musicology in 1976, and in July 2002, the Institute's assets were acquired by Paul L. Ranzini. " See website for more information. (ed.)

(IT) Arnaldo Forni Editore  Popular

"hough officially founded in 1973, the publishing firm of Arnaldo Forni began its operations back in the early sixties. Ever since then, owing to the quantity and quality of its output, it has held a leading position in the facsimile reprinting market.

The basis of the firm's publishing activities was the long and wide experience of the antique books market of its founder, Arnaldo Forni. The main incentive to transfer this experience from the commercial sector to that of industrial production was the increasing scarcity of antique books in the post-War years, as well as a growing demand, which could never hope to be satisfied by the available supply of original editions. Hence the decision to reproduce the original texts in limited editions, to be sold slowly over the years. Those were also years in which people were rediscovering the pleasure of reading, and particularly of reading books about one's "roots". From the very start, therefore, many of the Forni reprints were historical volumes on the towns, cities and regions of Italy." See website for more information. (ed.)

(FR) Editions Minkoff

"In twenty-eight years we have built up a collection of about 700 titles which cover practically every aspect of musical literature and of various repertoires stretching from the 15th to the 19th centuries and even the 20th century including:

* theoretical, historical and aesthetic works
* instrumental and singing tutors
* basic monographs
* journals and annuals
* instrumental tablatures (especially for lute, guitar, viol and organ)
* facsimiles of particularly important manuscripts (15th-20th centuries)
* facsimiles of musical scores for harpsichord, flute, piano-forte, viola, violin, voice and instrumental accompaniment and chamber music.

The works listed in the present catalogue have been chosen for their practical values as well as for their rarity. Most will be of interest not only to musicologists but also to musicians concerned with rediscovering authentic early performance practices. The resolution of many a controversy about the interpretation of early music is hindered by the inaccessibility of the relevant sources. Two or more works have occasionally been printed together in the same volume, when their subjects were related, with the aim of reducing their price. Forewords more or less developed (in English and in French) have been supplied, for the manuscripts series especially, to explain the choice of the work or the edition, to facilitate its use and to provide information on the author and his work.

Besides the Reprints, this catalogue includes many original works, most notably four important continuing series:

* Anthology of music criticism: Press dossier
* Archives of French music publishing
* Musical iconography
* Publications of the Centre de documentation Claude Debussy "

She initially studied at Trinity College with Edgar Hunt and Gwyneth George, and recently returned to Trinity to do postgraduate work on late French viols and the pardessus de viole. She has performed extensively on the professional concert scene, as a soloist and with her trio, "Musica Leonarda", playing with leading early musicians such as Ibi Aziz, Jenny Bullock and the counter-tenor, Joseph Schlesinger. In 2003, she gave the world premiere of Christopher Wood's "Chantry Suite" for pardessus de viole, written for Cecile Dolmetsch. She has also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and professional dance groups such as Saltarello.

As a teacher, Jacqui has been hugely influential in promoting the viol in schools. Since 1998, she has built up an extensive tuition programme for Warwickshire County Music Service. Around 40 pupils a year now study viol. Jacqui also gives workshops and demonstrations for children, and runs a number of childrens' viol consorts, which have played at major festivals throughout Britain. (UK) The Chaplet by Maurice Greene (1738)

"The Chaplet, being a collection of Twelve English Songs, was published anonymously by John Walsh of Catherine Street, the Strand in 1738 though is now known to be the work of Maurice Greene. Greene held most of the important musical posts in England before his 40th birthday. He was appointed Organist of St Paul's Cathedral, Organist and Composer of the Chapel Royal, Doctor of Music at Cambridge University and Master of the King's Musick. Maurice Greene's life nowadays may be defined through the mighty task he embarked on in collecting all the written church music up to that time and through a colossal falling out with Handel, the man he spent the best part of his life in the shadow of. He is, nevertheless, still prominent in the Cathedrals of England today through anthems such as "Thou visitest the earth" and "Lord, let me know mine end". He was, however, just as involved in the secular music of London and so 'The Chaplet' contains the bawdy drinking song as well as the plaintive ballad. The only songs to have been recorded are 'Ye Purple Blooming Roses', 'Fair Sally' and 'Sweet Annie' and these may be heard on this site. The text to all of the songs is the work of Greene's sometime librettist, John Hoadly. " Visit website for more information. (ed.)
