“This web site presents photos of, descriptions of, and information about historical European and American flutes from the renaissance to the 20th century. In addition, we give related historical material about performance practices and report on the author's experiences playing these instruments.

The old flutes have great charm and character. And they have much to teach us about the flute music written at the times when they were made.

Except where otherwise noted, all photographs of flutes are of instruments in the author's collection. A number of these flutes are modern copies of early instruments, but the majority are antique flutes made between c.1750 and c.1930. There are many personal opinions expressed in these pages, but they are based, it may be hoped, on knowledge and experience as well as taste, he said modestly. “Early Theatre is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes articles, reviews, and notes on medieval and early modern drama and theatre history, with a particular focus on records pertaining to actors, theatres, music, dance, and entertainment of all kinds. Our main emphasis is the performance history of art, entertainment, and festive occasions, primarily in England, but we also feature interpretive articles relating to the performances themselves. We also publish scholarship on subjects relating to early English drama as it impinges on or is influenced by other international practices. Overall, we aim to bring together the disciplines of history, art history, theatre history, music, politics, and economics so that these various scholarly concerns have a common forum in which to test theories about performance.

We publish full-length articles, shorter notes, and book reviews. Each year we also feature ‘Issues in Review’, a section of related, short essays that together highlight new research directions and shape the field for further work in such areas as repertory study, performance theory, or studies of neglected playwrights; our most recent ‘Issues in Review’ section, for example, focused on commedia dell’arte’s influence on seventeenth-century drama. Lyrica was founded by Dr. Louis Auld, Professor of French Literature at Central Connecticut State University in 1981. “In 1978, harpsichordist Elaine Comparone, National Endowment for the Arts grantee, Concert Artists Guild award winner, former Fulbright scholar and Affiliate Artist, founded Harpsichord Unlimited with Ronald S. Smith, librarian and music aficionado and Dorothy Wick, amateur harpsichordist and archivist. Their intent was to bring the harpsichord to a wide audience and to teach the public about the instrument, its history and its music.

The first project of Harpsichord Unlimited was a festival of chamber music at St. Joseph's Church in Greenwich Village. The series, known as the Winterfest Concerts, attracted large crowds and later extended its purview to St. Michael's Church on Manhattan's Upper West Side. These concerts ran for ten years, featuring Elaine Comparone, various guest artists and an in-house group, The Bach Family Strings. The programs included both little known and familiar early masterpieces along with contemporary works, all with harpsichord. …“

“This website is dedicated my research into the Life, Times and Works of the 18th century Sicilian Prelate, harpsichordist, violoncello player and composer Monsignor Antonino Reggio.

Monsignor Reggio was first mentioned in 1770 by the English musician and writer Dr Charles Burney who described him as a 'a pretty good composer and performer on the harpsichord and violoncello’. He also mentions Reggio had ‘2 or 3 delicate-toned harpsichords and a good library’. Reggio is also as possessing ‘the best Italian harpsichord for tone’ that Burney had heard in his travels. In his summing up on his visit to Rome, Burney describes Reggio as ‘eminent for [his] skill in the art, and learning in the science of sound’.

Later his prowess as a musician is described by the writer and poet, Giovanni Gherado De Rossi, as ‘a man of great intellect, erudite, and very deep in music.’

No information regarding Monsignor Reggio is recorded in any standard musicological source. Given that Dr. Burney considered him ‘a pretty good composer’, my research next focused on the possibility of his works being extant.

Although there is no direct reference to Reggio there is an oblique reference to an 18th century composer, A. Reggio, mentioned in an article in MGG. The author discusses the style of oratorios by Alessandro Scarlatti and Rinaldo da Capua and concludes that these are Intermezzi Sacra.  He mentions that the same style was being used later in the century in works by the ‘Neapolitaner,’ A. Reggio. The Author of the article was Rudolf Ewerhart. Ewerhart was one of the major scholars to study the manuscripts in the Santini collection in the Bischöfliche Bibliotek (now the Diözensanbibliothek) in Münster.  This led me to discover 16 manuscripts in  Santini Collection of the  Diözensanbibliothek. It is fortunate that many of these manuscripts contain dates, places and names of dedicatees so the following work is based upon my work on these annotations.”

“After enjoying the traditional English and European dance music of Blowzabella for many years, I finally succumbed to the temptation of learning to play the hurdy-gurdy myself.  I own a Symphonie from Chris Allen in the UK and have an electro-acoustic hurdy-gurdy on order from Denis Siorat in France.  Previously, I rented a Gotschy Phoenix and am taking lessons from René Meeuws in Nijmegen.
