Selon Jean is a concert of original format, constructed from parts of “St. John’s Passion” by Bach, and, by the translation of the Gospel in French by Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy at the end of the XVIIth century. For Bach, like all creators of the baroque period, the Word, incarnate in the human voice, was the focus of expression. By substituting the spoken recitatives of the Evangelist composed by Bach, of course we take the liberty of not adhering strictly to the original work. But this apparent betrayal also brings us back closer to the essential: the dramatic and expressive power of the Gospel text, magnified by the music of Bach. …”

Press Release

The historical town of Trevi nel Lazio (province of Frosinone), in the charming, unspoilt upper valley of the Aniene river, hosts the first edition of TREBANTIQUA, International Early Music Season (June 16 – August 18 2012). This first edition presents 6 concerts of high musical standards, with performers from Italy, Europe and the United States. All concerts are free of charge; 4 of them will be hosted in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, making use of the impressive, XVII cent. Bonifazi organ, and the remaining 2 in the beautiful Caetani Castle, where also a little archaeological museum can be visited.

Parthenia, New York’s premiere viol consort, will present Night Visions - a program of new music on Sunday, May 13 – 5:30 PM at The Secret Theatre, 44-02 23rd Street in Long Island City. This performance will be part of the Queens New Music Festival.

Parthenia’s program will include Richard Einhorn’s Variations on La Follia for treble, tenor and 2 bass violas da gamba, composed for them in 2011. The ground bass theme known as "La Follia" has captured the imagination of composers since Renaissance times. …
