This intriguing theme will unleash creative forces in our artists’ programming. We can look forward to emotional performances of sacred or secular passion – love, intrigue, jealousy, death, spirituality.

Enthéos is organizing its first Summer Academy to share the fruits of its research. It will focus on song and the Renaissance madrigal, two genres that help us discover the art of composers and French and Italian poets of the sixteenth century. This academy will highlight great composers who have benefited from the patronage of the great families of Lorraine as the dukes of Lorraine and Guise ... This repertoire is the subject of the next disc Entheos which is due out this fall. We will focus also works by Claudin de Sermisy which this year marks the 450th anniversary of his death. …
     


(FR) Sagittarius, Michel Laplénie Director: Voice Workshop "La famille Bach" (15-21 jul 2012)

Faculty: Michael Laplénie (musical direction), Emmanuel Mandrin (continuo organ) and Pierre Sciama (countertenor).

This year the workshop returns to the German music with the Bach family: a century of music from the ancestor,  Johann Bach to Johann Sebastian Bach. The work will also take aim at Johann Michael Bach and Johann Christoph Bach whose nephew Johann Sebastian says he was "a profound composer."

A reminder from Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra of its free concerts in June. A reminder as well that the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute (TBSI) is in full swing as of June 3rd and ends June 16 culminating in its “The Grand Finale” free concert extravaganza featuring the TBSI Orchestra and TBSI Choir performing along with the Tafelmusik Orchestra and Tafelmusik Chamber Choir.

Ready for a great Opera!

“The big O - symbol of the 2012 Poiesis Festival and of the great Opera - includes four musical events prepared by Marco Mencoboni for Friday 25 May, the opening day the of the 6th edition. The festival will start with a short prelude: 30 musicians, located in surprising spots, will play together when the bell of the square in Fabriano will toll. But the main show will be Ad Vesperas, an impressive vocal and instrumental music concert featuring Claudio Merulo's posthumous masses for 12 voices, brought back to life after four centuries of oblivion by the Cantar Lontano ensemble in the beautiful setting of the Fabriano cathedral. Works by Orlando di Lasso and Diego Ortiz will follow, in a polyphonic triumph made possible by 30 musicians conducted by Marco Mencoboni. Two more events will bliss your ears …

“In 1692, Henry Purcell's semi-opera "The Fairy Queen" was premiered. Henry Purcell used Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream as a template for the Baroque opera. Philippa Waite has choreographed several songs from the "Fairy Queen" into dances that are taught in this workshop.

Experience in Baroque dance is required for this course.

“Kick off the summer with a weekend of small and large ensembles on an idyllic retreat center campus in rural Connecticut. The Amherst Early Music Weekend Workshops are smaller, more relaxed versions of the summer festival. Take classes in a variety of subjects for most of the day -- repertory, notation, technique, and ensembles -- and in the evenings enjoy all-workshop group sessions (kind of like Collegium at the Festival) and a Sunday night faculty concert. There's also English country dancing and the companionship of your fellow musicians.”

The faculty includes Robert Barto, Sylvain Bergeron, Eduardo Egüez, soprano Ellen Hargis, soprano Carrie Henneman Shaw, Nigel North, Pat O’Brien, Paul O’Dette, luthier Andy Rutherford, Crawford Young, Douglas Freundlich, Christopher Morrongiello, and The Bacheler Consort. The 2012 Patrick O’Brien Lecturer is Grant Herreid.
