(US) Unquiet Thoughts Blog Post: "How great a role does Rhetoric play in 21st-century interpretation of music for voice and lute?" (11 Jul 2015)

Contributed by admin on Jul 21, 2015

"We return in a roundabout way to our ongoing theme of Rhetoric and education, touching the topic lightly with a rhetorical question: How great a role does Rhetoric play in 21st-century interpretation of music for voice and lute? To arrive at a qualified answer, today we tap into the writing of Robert Toft and his book Tune thy Musicke to thy Hart: The Art of Eloquent Singing in England 1597-1622. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1993. ...

(US) The Boston Musical Intelligencier Review: “Musica Pacifica: "Dancing in the Isles”" by Steven Ledbetter (13 Jun 2015)

Contributed by admin on Jul 20, 2015

"It is likely that a good part of the crowd surging toward Jordan Hall late in the evening on Friday night to hear an 11 o’clock BEMF performance by Musica Pacifica had a good idea of what to expect. I did not. This San Francisco-based ensemble consisted of seven superb players who presented a delightful program largely made up of dance tunes from the British Isles: Ireland, Scotland, and England. Any performance of some two dozen tunes simply played one after another runs the risk of monotony. But ...

Contributed by admin on Jul 16, 2015

"We all know that the biggest subsidisers of the arts are those who work in the arts. Very little work would ever make it to the stage if it was not for people giving their labour away for free, or being paid very poorly for what they do.

As the recent Stage Directors UK report indicated, even those who appear to be sustaining enviable careers are often surviving on fees that would be laughed at in other industries. ...
