(CA) Messiah Season has Arrived

Contributed by admin on Nov 08, 2015

With Christmas season fast approaching, reminders of the abundant performances of Handel's Messiah are now flowing into our inbox. While these reminders are far too numerous to post on our site, this is just a reminder to our readers to look to their local early music groups and lend their support in attending Messiah performances and/or even contributing direct financial support to these productions.

Ticket sales are just one of the many elements in helping finance these productions and direct financial contributions are most always needed to assure future productions of the Messiah.

Have a great Messiah concert experience!

Location: Great St. Mary's Church, Cambridge CB2 3PQ, UK

"The Four Seasons remains the most popular piece of classical music of all time.  To celebrate their 21st anniverary year, La Serenissima will be presenting a programme of these fabulous concertos, performed using a new edition made by violinist Adrian Chandler from parts which are in the hand of Vivaldi’s father, Giovanni Battista; this source is housed in the Henry Watson Library, Manchester, and represents the only surviving manuscript version of these pieces.  The performance will incorporate Adrian Chandler’s latest research into the genre of The Seasons made popular by Theocritus and Virgil, whose pastoral and Arcadian writings had such a major influence on the neo-Platonists at the court of the Medici; this movement in turn influenced Vivaldi’s own sonnets written to accompany the concertos. ...

(CA) Vinyl Record Sales and Commentary

Contributed by admin on Oct 14, 2015

While most of us have heard of the reappearance of the "vinyl record", there has been very little evidence, if any of its impact on the music industry ... and especially that of early music. It is quite obvious that the vinyl record pressing factories of yore have pretty well been reduced to just a few and struggling with sales. In the following piece that has appeared in the (UK) The Guardian, this whole question is taken up by its author giving us ...

"Our weekly posts are unapologetically focused on vocal music of the 16th century and the lute as it was regarded in its golden age; an emblem for all that was civilized and sophisticated, refined and nuanced.  Firmly committed to providing contextual references, we hope we might steer today’s lutenists away from their classical guitarist roots and and toward the sense and sensibility of an earlier time and a more intimate aesthetic.   ...

Contributed by admin on Oct 13, 2015

"The third and final instalment of the Academy of Ancient Music’s survey of Monteverdi’s operas at the Barbican began and ended in darkness; the red glow of the single candle was an apt visual frame for a performance which was dedicated to the memory of the late Andrew Porter, the music critic and writer whose learned, pertinent and eloquent words did so much to restore Monteverdi, Cavalli and other neglected music-dramatists to the operatic stage. ...
