“Join the Renaissance Singers for an evening of music, wine and conversation -  the first in a new series of ‘Meet the Artist’ evenings where eminent figures in the field of early music talk about the high points of their career and share some of the music that has featured most significantly on the way. Soprano Sally Dunkley is our first special guest and will be interviewed by Alistair Dixon, conductor of Chapelle du Roi and former Chairman of the Renaissance Singers.

Soprano Eileen Cecilia Callahan joins recorder players Sheila Beardslee, George Mastellone, Brian Warnock & Henia Yacubowicz for a 30 minute program of Lenten chorales and penitential psalms.  This program features works by Byrd, Wilbe, Morley, Bull, Hassler, Pedersøn, Cato, Lassus, Scarlatti, Buxtehude, Pachelbel and Bach.

Following our concert program, the Trinity Parish Choir (Robert Barney, director) will sing choral evensong, featuring canticles and the verse anthem “My shepherd is the living Lord” by Thomas Tomkins.

New Waves in Ferrara: Two Bands, Fresh Sounds

“Two of EMN's long-time favorites, the wind band Piffaro and the early music string ensemble King's Noyse, are joined by soprano Ellen Hargis in an insightful exploration of the music and cultural life of Ferrara, one of the great centers of the courtly arts in Renaissance Italy. The first Bach program in the new year will be the masterful St. Matthew Passion, presented February 24-27, 2012, and featuring tenor Wesley Rogers (Evangelista), baritone Joshua Copland (Christus), along with an octet of ABS vocal soloists including alto Danielle Reutter-Harrah, tenors Derek Chester and Aaron Sheehan, baritones Jesse Blumberg and Robert Stafford, and the American Bach Choir with members of the Pacific Boychoir.

“The pieces of this programme come from the Düben collection at Uppsala University in Sweden. This library holds most of his Geistliche Konzerte (sacred concertos), composed to cover the entire liturgical year. They are situated midway between the works of Heinrich Schütz and the cantatas of Dietrich Buxtehude. Their form as dialogues between named protagonists gives some of these compositions a highly expressive, dramatic aspect. The recitatives are in the vein of Carissimi while the arias are frequently sung by two voices. The instrumental sinfonias are for strings only.

ELIZABETH WALLFISCH CANCELS DUE TO ILLNESS
Arion Baroque Orchestra, February 16 2012

Due to illness, Elizabeth Wallfisch will not perform at the Ottawa Chamberfest Concert Series presentation of “Commedia Dell-arte” with Arion Baroque Orchestra. Ms. Wallfisch has withdrawn from the remainder of the Orchestra’s concert season. Award-winning violinist Dmitry Sinkovsky will take to the stage in her place.

As part of the Women’s World Day, the Société du Palais Montcalm, in collaboration with the Ensemble Anonymus and La Nef, present the German Ensemble “VocaMe“ in a program entitled “Kassia - Byzantine Hymns”. This concert will be at 8pm in Room 995 at D'Youville Place D'Youville.

Baroque Music, Early Chinese and Taiwanese Music

As part of the festival "Made in Asia" Les Passions, conducted by Jean-Marc Andrieu pairs up with the Jiang Nan - Yang Yi-Ping - Xinxin Nanguan Ensemble for its latest concert: "Mirages des sons du Sud" Baroque music, early Chinese and Taiwanese music.

The concert follows a free conference on the music of nanguan.
