2012 Graduate Student Conference:  Call for Papers

“The graduate students of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Arts, Department of Music, are pleased to announce a call for papers for their 2012 Graduate Student Conference entitled Confounding Expectations – Music and the Creative Act.  The conference will take place on Monday, May 14 and Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in the Rosza Centre on the U of C campus. 

News that the Musicisti Europei A Venezia, Roma E Napoli (1650-1750) project has opened its own website where you will find summaries of conferences held alternatively at the École Française de Rome and German Historical Institute in Rome in 2010-2011. You will also find information on the final conference held January 19 to 21, 2012.

“The 2012 Annual Meeting of the AMS will be held jointly with the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) and Society for Music Theory (SMT) in New Orleans, Louisiana, from Thursday, 1 November, to Sunday, 4 November. The Program Committee welcomes proposals for individual papers, formal sessions, evening panel discussions, sessions using alternative formats in all areas of scholarship on music, and joint sessions with SEM and SMT. Please read the guidelines carefully: proposals that do not conform will not be considered. …“
  

“The Music Graduate Student Association of the University at Buffalo is accepting paper proposals for the fifth annual Graduate Symposium on Music to be held on March 3-4, 2012. The conference will feature a keynote address by Tim Carter of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Professor Carter’s research ranges from Monteverdi and Mozart’s Italian operas to a recent book on “Oklahoma!” The Making of an American Musical (Yale University Press, 2007) and forthcoming work on Kurt Weill.
  

Call for Papers: Annual Meeting of the South-Central Chapter of the American Musicological Society, March 2-3, 2012.

Deadline for Submissions: Saturday, January 7, 2012.

The South-Central Chapter of the American Musicological Society (AMS-SC) is pleased to announce its 2012 Annual Meeting, to be hosted by Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. The meeting will begin on the morning of Friday, March 2, and will conclude by noon on Saturday, March 3. Proposals for presentations, special sessions, papers with a performance component, and panel discussions are solicited on any topic related to historical musicology.

Call for Papers: Fashioning Opera and Musical Theatre: Stage Costumes in Europe from the Late Renaissance to 1900 (15 nov 2011)

“Costumes play an essential role in the way we experience musical theater. They define character, action and belief, enhance the sonic dimension, and blur the boundaries between reality and fiction, past and present, the human and the fantastic. From court spectacles to popular entertainments, costumes, textiles, and accessories testify to the material culture of their social milieu and to the challenges facing the artists, artisans and designers who created them. This conference brings together experts of diverse backgrounds to discuss the history, economics and aesthetics of stage costumes in European opera and musical theater from the late Renaissance to 1900.

The website for Antiqua/Nova: Celebrating the Harpsichord Across the Centuries, the 2012 Joint Meeting and Festival of the Midwestern and Southeastern Historical Keyboard Societies, is now up and running at historicalkeyboardsociety.org. The 5-day event will be held at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, March 21-25, 2012, and promises to be a rich experience. The theme of this celebration, featuring The Eighth Aliénor International Harpsichord Composition Competition and The Seventh Mae and Irving Jurow International Harpsichord Competition, will be the harpsichord old and new.
  

“Call for Proposals: Antiqua/Nova: Celebrating the Harpsichord Across the Centuries

The joint meeting of the Midwestern and Southeastern Historical Keyboard Societies will be held at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, March 21-25, 2012.

Proposals for papers, mini-recitals, or lecture-recitals are invited on topics relating to historical keyboard instruments and repertoire. All presentations are limited to 25 minutes, with five minutes reserved for discussion.

“Chalice Consort is pleased to announce Chalice Consort Early Music Conference 2012 (CCEMC), which brings together performers, scholars, and listeners of early music to examine newly-discovered and edited sacred music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and select the top piece from those heard at the conference will be performed at a future concert by the Chalice Consort.

He has made over 50 recordings of international keyboard repertoire that spans the Renaissance to the Enlightenment; he has written numerous articles and reviews; he has edited new publications of music that constitute a treasure for generations of early music scholars and performers; and he has profoundly influenced, through his teaching, many of the top harpsichordists in the world.

Attending to Early Modern Women: Remapping Routes and Spaces
Milwaukee, Wisconsin  June 21-June 23, 2012

“Attending to Early Modern Women, which has been held seven times at the University of Maryland since 1990, is moving to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, thanks to the generous support of the College of Letters and Science at UWM. The conference will retain its innovative format, using a workshop model for most of its sessions to promote dialogue, augmented by a keynote, and a plenary session on each of the four conference topics: communities, environments, exchanges, and pedagogies.
