“In his unpublished 1970 dissertation on Domenico Scarlatti, Joel Sheveloff identified four major collections of the keyboard sonatas of Scarlatti, two Spanish and two Italian in origin.

The 19th Congress of the International Musicological Society will be held in Rome from Sunday, 1 July, to Saturday, 7 July, 2012. All musicologists are invited (including non-members of IMS) to participate and contribute to the conference.

“Did Bach Really Mean That? is a book which explores musical notation and the way in which composers of Baroque keyboard music used it.
 

Qualities of motion and emotion in song come from poetic images, melody, harmony, and voice leading, but they also come from rhythm and meter-the flow and articulation of words and music in time. This book explores rhythm and meter in the nineteenth-century German Lied, including songs for voice and piano by Fanny Hensel nee Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Hugo Wolf.

Les Amis du Clavecin (The Friends of the Harpsichord) is an association founded in 1991 by the Belgian harpsichordist Betty Bruylants. Its purpose is to foster people's knowledge and love of the harpsichord, an instrument which was extremely important in the history of western music for over three centuries.

Visual Acuity and the Arts of Communication in Early Modern Germany

The sixth international conference sponsored by FNI will address visual culture in early modern Germany. Artists, writers, preachers, musicians, and performers, as well as those whom they may represent, need audiences. In a society saturated with images, visualization, whether literal or imaginative, becomes a dynamic tool for communication. In early print culture writers, artists, and publishers experimented with how to combine visual images with text in order to make their messages more effective. Authors, such as Hans Sachs, often engaged their audiences through verbal pictures, such as vivid descriptions of settings and people. During the Early Modern period religious propagandists, political writers, satirists, cartographers, the scientific community, and others experimented with new uses of visual images. Practitioners of many disciplines adopted visual criteria for testing truth claims, investigating pressing problems, and representing knowledge.

Miguel Yisrael was born in 1973 in Lisbon, where he began his musical and artistic career, earning his Diploma in Classical Guitar in 1994. From 1999 to 2004, after studying the lute at the Paris Conservatoire, with Claire Antonini, Miguel Yisrael completed his musical education with the grand maestro Hopkinson Smith in Basel, Switzerland, at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Anne Southwell's poetry

Poetry by Anne Southwell, a strongly Calvinist writer, appears in two extant manuscripts. It is possible that they were both assembled under the supervision of Southwell herself and/or her second husband Henry Sibthorpe.

As well as secular and religious poetry by Southwell, the Folger manuscript contains a wide range of miscellaneous material: verse from songbooks and poems by Henry King, Arthur Gorges and Walter Ralegh (none attributed correctly), prose texts by Southwell and others and memoranda of various kinds, including 'A List of my Bookes' (Cavanaugh 1967).
 

In addition to concerts, Baroque vocal, flute, violin, lute, cello, viola da gamba and harpsichord courses will take place.
 

The Music Library Association, in memory of its Past President and Honorary Member Walter Gerboth, established the Gerboth Award. It is made to members of MLA who are in the first five years of their professional library careers, to assist research-in-progress in music or music librarianship.
